A Space Unlike Any Other

In 1975, Marilyn Megenity opened the Mercury Cafe in Five Points and created something Denver had never seen — a place where slam poets shared the stage with swing dancers, where open mic nights turned strangers into family, and where the only rule was to bring your full, weird, beautiful self.

For nearly five decades, the Merc was the beating heart of Denver's creative underground. It wasn't just a bar or a cafe — it was a living room for an entire city's counterculture.

After nearly five decades, Marilyn retired, and in 2025, The Pearl — Denver's sapphic-focused bar and cafe — moved in to carry the torch forward, honoring the Mercury's legacy while building something new for Denver's LGBTQIA+ community and beyond.

This isn't just a bar. It's a cultural landmark. And like public radio, great community spaces don't survive on drinks alone — they survive because people believe in them.

The Pearl is keeping the spirit alive: the swing dancing, the open mics, the late-night piano, the philosophy debates over whiskey. But historic buildings cost real money to maintain, and Denver's rising costs threaten to do what 50 years of change couldn't — close the doors for good.

The Math Is Simple

Keeping a historic cultural space alive in Denver isn't cheap. Between the building, utilities, maintenance, and keeping events accessible — it takes a village.

$20,000
needed monthly to keep the doors open

That's less than the cost of a single Denver condo. Split across a community of supporters, it's a few bucks a month to preserve something irreplaceable.

Questions? We've Got Answers.

Where does my money go?
100% goes toward keeping the building and space alive — maintenance, utilities, insurance, and making sure events stay accessible and affordable. This is a historic building, and it takes real resources to preserve it.
Can I cancel anytime?
Absolutely. No commitments, no guilt trips. You can cancel your membership anytime through your Stripe account. We hope you'll stay, but we'll love you either way.
Do I need to be in Denver to support?
Not at all. Some of our biggest supporters are people who experienced the Mercury Cafe years ago and want to make sure it's still there for others. Distance doesn't diminish love.
What's the relationship between The Pearl and the Mercury Cafe?
The Pearl operates in the historic Mercury Cafe building, carrying forward its legacy of community, creativity, and inclusivity. The building has been preserved so The Pearl can bring fresh energy and programming to the space.
Is my contribution tax-deductible?
Memberships are not tax-deductible as The Pearl is a for-profit business. Your support directly funds the preservation and operation of the space.
